From $175

Long brunette balayage with soft waves at Salon 592 in Shrewsbury, MA

Balayage, highlights or foilyage?

All three brighten your hair. The difference is how the lightener is placed, which changes the look, how bright you can go and how often you’ll come back. They’re all booked the same way, at the same price.

Balayage is a hand-painted highlighting technique. Instead of foils in a set pattern, your stylist sweeps lightener on freehand, so the color looks soft and natural with no harsh regrowth line.

Hand-painted

Balayage

How it’s done

Lightener is swept on freehand, where the sun would naturally hit.

The look

Soft, blended and lived-in, with a gentle root.

Upkeep

Lowest. Grows out gracefully with no harsh line.

Best for

A natural, sun-kissed look with fewer visits.

No harsh regrowth line

Customized to your cut and face shape

Easy to stretch between appointments

Classic foils

Foil highlights

How it’s done

Fine sections are woven or sliced and placed in foils from the root.

The look

Even, defined brightness from root to end.

Upkeep

Higher. Regrowth shows sooner as it grows out.

Best for

Going noticeably brighter, or covering gray.

Most lift and brightest results

Precise, consistent placement

Blends gray beautifully

Painted, then foiled

Foilyage

How it’s done

Painted by hand like balayage, then wrapped in foil to boost the lift.

The look

The softness of balayage with more brightness.

Upkeep

Low to moderate. Blended root, brighter ends.

Best for

Darker hair that wants a brighter balayage.

Brighter than open-air balayage

Still a soft, blended grow-out

Great for darker or resistant hair

Add depth to any of them

Lowlights

Lowlights are strands colored a shade or two deeper than your base. Where highlights add brightness, lowlights add depth.

They can be done on their own or combined with balayage, highlights or foilyage for more dimension, so your blonde never looks flat.

On their own

Richness and movement for brunettes and reds, or a softer way back to your natural shade.

With balayage

Deeper pieces make painted brightness pop even more.

With highlights

Breaks up heavy blonde so it looks dimensional, not flat.

With foilyage

Keeps bright ends grounded with depth near the root.

You don’t have to choose. Your stylist will recommend the right mix for your hair, and many sessions use two or three techniques at once.

How blonding works here

You choose how much. We choose how, together

Every technique on this page is booked as one blonding and dimension session, and a glaze is always included. Your price depends on how much hair we work on, not what technique we use.

One session might mix classic foils at your part, foilyage at the crown and balayage at the nape, with lowlights woven through for depth.

Gray blending

Blend your grays instead of covering them

Highlights and lowlights weave through your grays so they melt into your color. As your hair grows, regrowth looks softer and more natural

Gray blending is booked as a blonding and dimension session, priced by coverage: face frame from $175, partial from $235 and full from $310.

Prefer full coverage? Root color covers grays at the root from $130, and you can add it to any blonding session, from $225 for root color and a face frame.

Not sure which is right for you? Book the complimentary 15-minute consultation and we’ll help you choose.

Blonding questions

How much is balayage or highlights in Shrewsbury, MA?

All blonding at Salon 592 is priced by coverage: face frame from $175, partial from $235 and full from $310. Balayage, highlights, foilyage and lowlights all cost the same.

What’s the difference between balayage and highlights?

Balayage is painted by hand for a soft, blended look. Foil highlights give more even, defined brightness from the root. Foilyage is painted like balayage, then foiled for extra lift.

Does balayage cost more than highlights?

No. Every technique is booked as a blonding session, and your price depends on how much hair we work on.

What are lowlights?

Lowlights are strands colored deeper than your base. They add depth on their own, or pair with balayage, highlights or foilyage for more dimension.

Do I need a consultation first?

It’s not required, but we recommend the complimentary 15-minute consultation if you’re going much lighter or have box dye.

Which technique should I book?

Just book the coverage you want. Your stylist will recommend the right mix of techniques at your appointment.

Can highlights blend gray hair?

Yes. Highlights and lowlights weave through your grays so regrowth looks softer and more natural. Gray blending is booked as a blonding session, from $175 for a face frame.

Should I cover my grays or blend them?

Root color gives full coverage and starts at $130. Blending with highlights and lowlights gives a softer grow-out. You can also combine them, from $225 for root color and a face frame. See gray coverage for more.
